The first thing every tourist does, after they check into their hotels that is, is to go to the Acropolis of Athens. The photos I have posted on these pages were all take by me on January 20th, 2006. No matter what season, be it summer, fall, spring or winter, the light on the marble will never cease to amaze. The sun was shining amid the white clouds; the wind was blowing briskly and the people were few enough to get clear and uncluttered shots. I am especially fond of the sharp angles and the perspectives shot from under the columns. You can clearly see the black residue from the pollution emitted by the cars collecting under the marble structure. Much restoration has been completed on the Acropolis in the last 25 years and continues to progress. Eventhough I hadn't been to the top of this ancient monument in over four years, I was amazed and astounded at how captivating it feels to stand on this so famous spot. The mind is boggled at the thought of just how this was built...details that I will try to fill in on other spaces on further pages.... keep checking back as these pages are in progress, just as the restoration of the Acropolis...

Wonderful! Amazing! Not to be missed! Everytime I visit this museum, I see something new. The exhibitions on the Acropolis are constantly being renovated and new things are being added. It definately warrents return visits! Don't think if you have gone once, you have seen and absorbed everything. You may be surprised the next time you go, that you see something you hadn't noticed before, or you will definately see it with a new perspective. All Greek citizens, who are in the know that is, are hoping that one day all the pieces that were 'stolen' and taken to other museum, namely the erroneously called 'Elgin Marbles,' will be rightly returned to be seen in the original home they were meant to dwell in for eternity. Until that day arrives, no visit to the Acropolis or it's museum will be complete!

This picture was taken on a cold winter's day in January 2006, when the light was perfect. 4pm, when they were throwing people off the monument; early winter hours, guards anxious to find their ways down the winding paths of Plaka, on their way to a warm dish of hot Athenian food? We were the last to linger; waiting for the perfect light...the sliver of light that was slipping through the cloud as it sank into the the shining waters on the horizon. The sea looked like a mirror, reflecting the 'old' new sunlight as it flooded the Earth once again; The light shone on this sacred ancient monument. Captured on a digital space; transferred to the internet grid; viewed by anonymous virtual tourist for unmeasurable light years away. The epitomy of Athens, the old mingled with the new; forever changing; forever the same. Save the Earth for these precious visions. Respect our heritage and those who strived to create a lasting beauty. Join the Quest for Peace on this Earth. Rebuild the fallen monuments and make our unity as 'one' nation of 'human beings' forever lasting. Terrorism tears apart our 'hearts' and leaves only tears.

When I was an art Student way back when I was still young and idealistic....I once attended a summer watercolour workshop. We would take our easels out into nature and paint. We felt no inhabitions. We loved what we were doing, finding a way to express our visions through the medium of paper, colours, brushes and our imaginations. Today, with modern technology, you can take your digital camera, take the shots, and then open your images in a photo workshop software programme, such as Coral PHOTO PAINT, which is just what I have done with one of my recent photos of the Athens Acropolis. This was the very first time I had worked in this programme...a long overdue adventure! I think it turned out rather interesting. What do you think? The photo itself, was an interesting juxtaposition of the ancient structure and the modern scaffolding that is being used to restore the marble fixtures. The constant appearance of the sky with the Greek Blue and the soft white clouds, naturalize the composition. A modern day sketch!

Pictures are not enough to realize the impact these pieces of art have on your senses. You really must visit this museum to totally appreciate the wonder of ancient civilization's skill in creating these masterpieces. It is even easier today, as there has been built a new stairway structure leading up to the Acropolis, that most people can easily climb...not like in the past when one had to climb the original and very big and slippery marble stones to get to the top!

The New Acropolis Museum is a magnificent monument showcasing the old within the modern walls of what can only be described as 'AMAZING.' The first time I walked up toward the entrance, my eyes were naturally focused above as I walked towards the towering portico and tried to gather in all the new dimensions. I was just in total amazement and thrilled as I moved closer to the huge structure made of marble, glass and steel. Suddenly, I felt the texture of the ground below change from the smooth marble walkway that had led me so far, become something smoother and slightly slippery. I looked down and to my disbelief, I was standing on a thick glass panel that gave light below...far, far below, to the exposed ancient walls and ruins of the city that had once housed the Ancient Athenians during the same time as the Acropolis was at its height of importance. What an incredible feeling! By All Means...Go at NIGHT, to see the dramatic effects of the lighting under the museum and through the glass walkways.

If you have time, go to the new Athens Acropolis Museum at Night! You will be able to see the ruins that were uncovered during the excavation of the new museum building site, from the impressive lighting that has been strategically placed under glass panels that you walk on and look far down to the old building foundations !
