Sunset over Marble Walls-poem written by janetanne

Room without a View
The light in Greece is renowned. The sun sets above it all,
no sound.

Ah Cold White Pendelis,
Honey from Hymitous,
how many sunsets have you seen?

The ancient mingles with modern
myths being made,
Give me my ouzo in the shade

of a fragrant fir
of wild oregano
of thymari
wild dreams of Dionisian
wines being drunk

Athena
gone are your noble days
cememt and sad structures
give no hint of human existence
within whose walls computer keys
strike

Come quick
before the columns before you
are covered with black
car fumes
We fume at the injustice
the day democracy dies.

Who gave you the right to
destroy my view
to cover the hills around you
Athena
to take away my freedom
of clean air
of clean water
of chemical free food?

Who gave you the right to
destroy my beauty
my marble temples
my wildflowers
covering the hills

Who told you to cover my rivers
with concrete hotels
and asphalt roads
crowding my senses
with senseless structures?

No balance
No harmony
No peace
Noise, noise, noise
fills my space
and empties my joy

Take me back to Troy
to Alexander
to Plato
to Socrates
To the first play performed at
Herodotus
Heroes
Art
Reason
