"Viethi Beach, Nomos Keratea, Hidden Serenity" Keratea by janetanne

The small community of Viethi , is unknown, I would venture to guess, to 98% of any Athenian you might ask directions. I am sure, that those few lucky people who have built their summer retreats here, have so chosen this ideallic spot, mostly for the isolation and for the magnificent views across the open Mediterranean with 'Eubea' the largest Greek island, lying silently along the Eastern horizon. It also doesn't hurt that this place is only 40 minutes from Athens by car!
To find this hidden spot, you should drive along the road from the Attiki Odos, exiting at Marcopolous and continuing down the highway towards Keratea and Lavrio. After you have passed the exits for Keratea, keep an eye out for a small convenience store called 'Stathmos' that is in an old railroad station house on the western side of the road. You will see a small sign with the word in Greek: 'Biethi' where you will turn on an angle to the right and follow a narrow dirt road that leads parallel to the highway you will just have exited. This will lead you to a tunnel that goes under the highway. Follow this road until you see thethe houses scattered along the hills of Viethi and the sea far below!
Unfortunately, not everyone is able to afford the 'esthetically appealing' summer house that my friends are so lucky to have. The hills surrounding all of the Attiki coast line, as is especially illustrated in Viethi, have mostly been constructed in a piecemeal fashion. Each person has built his own little house, with whatever extra money they have had at the time, in anyway that they could. The result has been to many persons' dismay, the eyesores that blot and distract from the once natural beauty that was Greece. This is man's way. Who is to say that even the poor do not deserve a 'room with a view?' Even if it isn't a castle, it is the summer retreat of many.
- Pros:Peace, Quiet, Sea, Sun, cool breezes, Dolphins swimming by
- Cons:Too good to be true
- In a nutshell:Don't tell anyone

Janet, had to get my fix of Greece. Cool pool is right. Is the pool part of the Wright inspired home. Does it fit in with the other Island homes? When I was young, I had a black Lab that would surf with me. Great little swimmer.
Very lovely place Janet, thanks for the wonderful tips and photographs. I enjoyed them.
The Lloyd Wright influence is immediately obvious in photo of that house. It blends so well with the surroundings. Loved the sunset & beach pictures.
Very nice place! Ahh, if I was Abramovich or another Russian oligarch... Thank Janet for making me dream of it!
