Before leaving to Caracas for 10 days - during the most recent elections, I was given a million fatalistic warnings, mostly from former middle/upper class Venezuelans or their friends currently living in the US or other Latin Americans. Needless to say, I survived and had absolutely no bad experience nor felt anymore in danger than in Atlanta. I would urge anybody going to Isla Margarita or a similiar destination in Venezuela to at least take one day to explore this major South American metro metropolis and the cultural hub of the country, instead of just staying in the airport "overnight". It's strange to say you've experienced Venezuela without it.
