German Pillbox on Omaha Beach
Excerpt from journal: June 13, 2004

60 years after the invasions of D-Day, the beaches of Normandy are quiet. Walking along Omaha beach, I am reminded of its violent history by my young French guide. 2,374 soldiers died storming German fortifications. From where I stand I can make out the forms of pillboxes dotting the coast, crumbling from years of neglect. Children chase the retreating waves, oblivious to the rusting machine guns and empty bunkers 100 feet away. As I hear their laughter, I know the sacrifice made by Allied troops on June 6, 1944 was not in vain...

Brian, you captured well the historical Normandy beaches. I'm sure it's really touching to visit knowing how many lives were lost. On the other hand, Bayeux seems very cheerful and a pretty city to visit. Lovely photos as usual!
