The oldest town in Norway!!! Tønsberg is still the oldest town in Norway. In the last decades there have been several attempts to remove the town from this glorious position, but all attempts have failed! No town in Norway have so far managed to provide older historic evidence of existence. |
|  | Slottsfjellet - Tønsberg's landmark Slottsfjellet (litt. Castle Mountain) with its tower (Slottsfjelltårnet) is the landmark. It can be seen from quite a distance and was the location for the Mideveal castle Tunsberghus. From here the regional kings reigned the area. |
Summertime!!! Almost everytime I meet someone for the first time and I tell them I come from Tønsberg, they reply something like: "Oh, I've been there! It's such a nice place!" You see, here in Norway, people know Tønsberg as the ultimate SUMMER town. (If they came during winter, I'm not sure they would be impressed :-) ) As the town is right on the Oslo fjord, there are loads of seaside activities during summer. We have some very nice beaches, and one of the Tønsbergers' favorite summer passtime is to go with their small (or LARGE) cabin cruiser out to one of the islands outside town.
