City of life

by shobhanaj - last update: Jun 8, 2004

Bombay (or Mumbai as it is known) is a city that you either hate or love. I fall in the latter category. I was born here and have spent most of my life in this city apart from a brief three and a half years in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

It is a city of stark contrasts. While you see poverty everywhere, you also see affluence. There are those who make it and those who spend a lifetime trying to make it. To a large part of India, coming to Bombay is like going to New York. This is where dreams come true. This is where you give all you've got and it makes a success story out of you.

My husband had no attachment to Bombay till we moved here in December 2003. But now, the Bombay blood runs in his veins. The buzz, the never-will-die and anything is possible attitude didn't take long to convert him and he loves the city as much as I do.

Sadly, many travelers use Bombay as a transit point. While the Lonely Planet does justice to South Bombay, there is a lot more to this city than just Colaba and Fort. There are many caves in the suburbs (in need of urgent repair) that date back a few hundred years. One needs to step into the suburb Bandra and see the many churches with various influences on its architecture. Of course these days Bandra has become synonymous with restaurants and is "the" place to be.

Nice photos here but Bombay's culinary delights are much more than the some up market hip joints.I grew up in this wonderful city.

Hi! Thank you very much for sharing your lovely tips with us. I enjoyed your insights & personal experiences. I only had a stop-over in Mumbai once & visited 1 hotel for dinner, but hope to explore this city properly one day! Greetings from Dubai :-) Jess
