Located about 57 km from Colombo, Avissawella is the main entry point leading to the wetland areas of the country. Getting there by train or bus is possible within a maximum time frame of 2.45 minutes. I would recommend a train ride from Fort where you could simply enjoy the breathtaking scenic view outside the train window after passing Panagoda station. Check out the pics I've posted.
Why Avissawella ? Has remnants of an ancient Kingdom that used to be called Seethawakapura that are worthwhile to see. The attractions although locally known, have still not caught on as a tourist site but definitely has value of heritage and ancient architecture.
Set among scenic landscapes the ruins of Seethawakapura still bears the resemblance of an ancient kingdom that existed. Abundant in Rubber, rice and Tea plantations the greenery that graces the landscape makes it a very scenic place that can be reached within a short time.
From Avissawella it is possible to get to most other places of attraction such as Hatton, Kandy, Ratnapura etc.,
I would recommend the ruins in Seethawake because of its quiet, least crowded and for being non touristy. Great to walk and experience the local life around the areas where the ruins are located.
- Pros:Less crowds, not caught on with the flashy touristy organizers, very scenic view
- Cons:If you are depending on public transport, the connections between the site locations although do exist are not frequent
