Fort William & The Surrounding Area Scotland is a hilly place, but the first time you head for Fort William you are immediately taken aback by the height of the mountains around the area, I should add that they are not all in Fort William, if you are travelling from the South you will probably come through Glencoe and the surrounding villages - some of this area is totally breathtaking, but then you get to Fort William itself and you see the "elephant" --- surprised ? I was too, I went on a boat trip from the little harbour area and the guy doing the commentary on the boat as we cruised down the loch told us to look back at Ben Nevis - from a certain angle it looks like an elephant - same colour too which makes it even more eerie. |
| | Seal Island This is a island that changes in size due to the tide, it is a well known spot for viewing seals and some other sea life creatures. We took a boat trip which takes you down towards the island, on the way down you are told to look out for some other wildlife such as eagles on the shore, porpoises and the seals - at the pier you have a board indicating what has been sighted in the past few days. |
| | Things to do or see Fort William is not the biggest place in the world, there is a little shopping area with the usual tourist type shops, especially the Scottish tartan and whisky variety. As it is a fairly hilly area there are also a few dedicated sports shops which specialise in mountaineering kit. There are plenty of tea/coffee establishments and several reasonable restaurants ranging from Chines, Indian, Italian and Scottish. |
