"Nice Place" Oxford by RPW

Morse and all that stuff

I first visited Oxford in July 2002, went to do some work at a place on the outskirts of Oxford near to Didcot but I was staying at a really nice hotel in Wolvercote. Went back last year and stayed at the other side of town in a hotel that I would rather forget all about, then in a house in Abingdon Road. Moving to the house gave me a lot more freedom, made friends with the local landlord and his family at a great pub - The Berkshire House, its on Abingdon Road, don't miss it especially if you are a Manchester United or Celtic fan.

City of Spires

They say that Oxford is a city of dreaming spires, there are some pretty impressive old buildings which form some of the colleges and chapels. One thing I found strange in Oxford is the term "Oxford University". In most places you have the University for example, Glasgow, St.Andews, Edinburgh, Manchester. However in Oxford you have a specific college that appears to be then affiliated under the entire Oxford University Umbrella.

Thames or Isis

I, like many millions of others had heard of the University Boat Race, and had also heard of the pre race between the so called "B teams" - Isis v Goldie crews. Well I have now been to the Isis and seen it, there appears to be three main rivers converging around Oxford, Thames, Isis & Cherwell. It's great in the summer to sit on the river bank or at the Head of the River Pub and watch everyone messing around on their punts or hired rowing boats.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Good selection of people and places to see
  • Cons:Town centre is a nightmare, both shopping wise and trouble wise at weekends.
  • In a nutshell:Excellent place to see, but be careful at night in town.

I came with Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for Christmas Ball. Very very poor food indeed. Was shocked at poor quality. Bendy, grey roast potatoes, sprouts all watery. Disgusted. DJ fit for school disco. Dreadful waste of £29.50
