Very humble ,,, very modest ...
Outside the Uk, unless people have actually been here, it's the only way to describe where I live ... half way between Birmingham and Manchester.
"Is it near London?" is often the next enquiry ...
"Nooo ... about 150 miles (250 kms) north ...."
Contains much beauty and diminishing ugliness ... and some of the nicest people in the world in my opinion ( ... including me!!! ... just kidding!)
Newcastle is quite a pretty little place really. It was mentioned in the Doomsday book and is often described as a market town
Stoke is weird .... and changing a lot. The "bottle kilns" in the photo used to be everywhere, like the pit-heads - and there was a huge iron and steel works. Now the kilns are few and far between (as are the pot banks), the coal mines have all been closed, and the last remnants of Shelton Bar Iron and Steel Works is about to disappear. We now have a lot of retail parks, cleaner air and are by the busiest stretch of motorway in Europe which is another tale ....

Was on the first large jet to land in Newcastle. A DC8-63 a charter flight from Los Angeles. Back a bit - 1966?
Anyways - Happy Birthday!
Is it near Manchester? 'Cause I want to see Morrissey - oh wait he's in London now, in't he? Which brings us back 'round to the same question - is it near London?? :)
