A University colleague, back in July 2000, asked me if I was interested in teaching in Sarawak (East Malaysia, next door to Brunei).
It seems that a private University called
Inti Management College was looking for business lecturers for its Kuching campus.
I duly replied and sent off the necessary paperwork and waited. I received a response from them which was positive and then had to send more details off to them including passport information etc.
For some reason the Malaysian Government changed the rules and expats were no longer welcome. Inti then rejected my application.
I wrote to the head office of Inti and explained how much time and money i had spent on the application and politley expressed my regret at not receiving the posting.
Well, near the end of 2001 they responded with an apology.
A week later they then made me an offer to work in Beijing. Same job, same offer, different city.
I accepted the job on some conditions and lo and behold, on the 17th of January, 2001, I flew in a blustery and bitterly cold Beijing.
