Great city, gallerias, squares and lot of space

by Renescheffer - last update: Feb 26, 2005

In General

A square in Torino
For some pics: go to Photo album on my homepage.

I visited Turin 4 times between 1993 and 2000. What did me do come back ? The very good hotel Rocca & Roma Cavour at the Piazza Carlo Felice (50 meters left of the Central Station), where we got weekendtarif rooms for about 130000 itl (now 65 euro). The gallerias. The space. The city fills the space between the river Po and the mountains. The markets....such as the saturday one at the Piazza Republica. Juventus off course. In the period we where in Italy there were some interesting games against Lazio, Inter and Galatasaray; some restaurants such as Toscana in a street left (tram stop in front of it) of the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, de "lijkwade" of Jesus Christ. The Egizio Museo. The Pallazo Reale (duques of Savoia). Other traveling Italians told us that Milanese people are far less friendly compared to the Turines people. Milan can be reached in 1,45 minutes by train. Some VT ladies are living there like Piccolina (now COMO) Polly 74. ..... and perhaps more.
The best thing is to arrive here by train. When you leave the Staziona Porto Nova you are on a square and will have a beautifull view onwards the Via Roma. The station area was dangerous because of hookers, illegals and thieves but was in 2000 pretty safe. Other possibilties nearby: Asti and Alba, the Cinzano factory near Sta Vittoria d' Alba (nice hotel on the hill) , The Barolo region etc. Go there ! I am triggered to give some more tips because of the support of the Turines young ladies Polly and Piccolina. Who could resist that....

Lago Maggiore !
Only one hour drive. Famous in the 60' s'. In the 70-90's Lake Garda and Lake Como took the lead. But...the old fashioned and unspoiled vilages and lakeside attracts touirists again. From the Lake (south) you can reach Torino in 1 hour. Give it a try.

Update october 2004

Update october2004:

Not much changed. I am still positive about Turin. In the Porto Nuevo station area a lot of authentic restaurants and bars with elderly owners have changed in modern bars, hotels or design shops. I have never seen so much cheap fruit and clothes at the mercato at the Piazza Republica.
Because of the winter Olympics 2006 a lot in Turin is under construction, the tramway, the station and the Piazza's.

Me and the two puppets.
I guess i am one of the first
Dutchmen on a photo with these. I was just wondering who were in there. A man, women of children. Anyway s(he) felt warm.

Anyone who wants to go to the Olympics 2006. Try to get a room in the Roma & Rocca Cavour hotel near the station (see tips)
