Venice, still a lot to explore

by Renescheffer - last update: May 15, 2004

Arriving by boat

Cannaregio

The area near the train station. It is said that this part of Vencie is the least interesting because a lack of historical buildings. But i think this part is the most appealing for 85 % of all tourists. When you arrive by train you are in the middle of everyting you expect in Venice: canals, traghetto, shops, tourist etc.
In this area are the cheapest hotels and are some good restaurants as well as a lot of tourist traps.
When you walk more than 100 meter off the Lista di Spagna or Strada Nova you get the idea that you are the only one and have explored a not yet spoiled part of Venice.

From here to Rome by train

Almost 600 km !
But with the fast trains it is possible to arrive in 4 hours in Rome. Trains are very comfortable. Buy a ticket, go to the train at 13 hr and at 17 hr you are in Rome. No waiting for taxis, checking inn, looking for parking place. From citycenter to citycenter by plane will cost you 5-7 hrs. With car 6 hrs and a lot of stress.
A ticket cost 40 euro one way.
In a train you can read, sleep or watch other passengers. We saw a young man trying to make an appointment with an obviously beautyifull lady. The lady reacted not negaitive. The man gave his adress. The lady said in Italian language something like . . . OK when i have time and we come too an agreement, perhaps. The lady had red lips but also big hands and feet. The young man looked as if this would be his forst girlfriend. All other people watched the scene and after it had ended and the two went to another parts of the train, they said pfffffft and laught a little as if the wanted to show that they saw it was a travestite hooker and where happy not to be in the position of the man.

Restaurants and hotels

Hotels:
They are expensieve. Even
the cheapest pensions or 1 * hotels near the station will cost about 100-130 euro in summer. In winter it will be between 70-100 euro. for a two bed room. A decent 2 or 3 star hotel has prices of 160-250 euro (winter: 100-150). Other options: Mestre, 10 minutes by train: 25 % cheaper or Padua 30 minutes by train and 35 % cheaper.

Restaurants:
A few affordable restaurants can be found in a street parallel of Strada Nova, called Calle d Oca, for example pizzeria Casa Mia. It is a 10 minutes walk from the train station
In Mestre you could try Da Bepi. 300 meter from trainstation in a street at the right side, Via Sernaglia 27.
