Restaurant Name: Afunti Uighur Restaurant
Fantastic food (muslim, halal) from the province of Xinjiang from the far west. This restaurant only serve one short session per day from around 6pm to 10pm. If you come late, you will find yourself eating with the crowd dancing on your table!! Yes, table top dancing is what make it very special. Also, they have one of the best belly dancer performance on stage. Common sighting of celebraties like Jackie Chan, Bill Gates, etc..
Favorite Dish: Da Pan Ji - A local chicken dish serve with the la mian from the west. Very delicious and will make you crave for more. Alternative choices recommended are the Yang Rou Chuan and the Afanti Band (a sizzling beef that produce rythmic sounds like the band) Note: Remember to make table reservation prior to visit.

Restaurant Name: Lao Han Zhi Hakka Restaurant
Definitely one of the best Hakka restaurant. Good taste and yet very reasonably priced. They have a few branchese around but in my opinion the maiden shop at Sanlitun preserves the best taste they can give. The speed for them to serve the dishes is increadibly fast. However, this place is always crowed. If you reach there after 7pm, you might have to wait in the queue for as long as an hour. My advise is to be there slightly earlier cos it seems that most Beijinger then to rush into that place at about the same time. Be there around 6:45pm should be good enough to get a table. It is extremely difficult to locate the place. However, I was there like almost every other weekend. Just follow the direction below and you wont miss it!! Directions: Coming from the Embassy area, enter Sanlitun from the North. Just right before the bar street, you should see a tiny junction leading you to the "Thai Elephant restaurant, with a huge CROSS (X) signboard for Cross Bar, at the junction. Take a right turn and walk for about 50 steps . When you see an entrance (with some sort of gate like structure) on your right, turn into the local estates (hutong). Don't worry about the darkness of the place... 100% safe there. I have done it more than 50 times. Keep walking straight up, the restaurant is about 60 steps from the entrance.
Favorite Dish: 1. Soup of the day 2. Stir fried fish in aluminium foil 3. Lotus leaf beef 4. Steam veg in basket 5. Salt baked chicken

Restaurant Name: Lao Zhang Jiao Zhi Dian
Very cheap place to fix your hungry stomach. All types of dumpling are served here. They are made on the spot, the JIT method. The taste is fabulous. For those who loves dumpling, this is a cheap and nice place to go. Nothing fanciful on the restaurant, just another typical local restaurant. A hearty meal for 4 or 5 people with more than 60 dumplings and 2 to 3 side dishes plus chinese tea will only cost about RMB 30 (US$4 !!!!! ) Located opposite Lido Holiday Inn Hotel. From the North-East gate of Lido Hotel, cross the road to the stretch of shops houses, walk towards the Shopping Street. Right before the entrance of the shopping street, there is a metal gate entrance into the housing area. Walk in even it appears to be locked... The restaurant is the 2nd shop from the gate.

Flightperson Thu Sep 14, 2006 07:55 UTC I've been there when I had my trip in Beijing. You are right, it is a nice bar with comfortable atmosphere. Eventhough I don't dance. I also talked with the owner. He is Italian, right? Would like to be there again for my next trip to Beijing in Nov. | beijing72 Mon Jul 31, 2006 09:41 UTC there is no longer departure tax at any Chinese airport for international or domestic flights, you will now see it already on your ticket | crewrower Wed Feb 8, 2006 11:38 UTC Funny that you mentioned the starbucks in the forbidden city. My friends think it is terrible that starbucks is there. But I think it is ok; if you're gonna have vendors in there, why not american coffee? ALSO-ap tax not gone,it's just in ticket price | ilschiu Tue Aug 2, 2005 16:41 UTC The airport tax was scrapped as of 2005. |
