Li Jiang - World Heritage City

by AC1 - last update: Apr 19, 2004

Unbelievable sightings

Main street of Gu Cheng
Li Jiang, a city categorised as one of the world heritage city by the United Nation, is located in the province of Yunnan. Yunnan is on a plateau of highland thus it enjoys breezing cool weather all year round.

The wonder about Li Jiang is that you will be very surprise to see the existence of an ancient city which people still live in houses more than 500 years old. An interesting fact about this city is that, each house have a stream passing by it either at the front of at the back of the house. No cars are allowed within the Gu Cheng.

Many people lost their way out once they get deeper into the city. A rule of thumb to get yourself out to the entrance will be by looking at the way the water runs in the stream. I was told that following the direction of the water flow will bring you to the main entrance to the city.... very simple and unbelievebly intelligent..
Water Mill Machine
Interestingly you will find many westerner retiring in this wonder city. I was told that each of the houses costs around US$60K if you can find one who is willing to sell. Most of the residents run businesses that ranges from selling souveniers, silverware, handmade silk prints to pubs and restaurant.

In the night, the pub streets is especially busy with people hanging byu the streams and have a beer or two. Occasionally you may find a saxphonist performing to the tourists from pub to pub...
Everything here is back to the basic and the past. From the building to the clothing people wear.. it is like twilight zone... back in the 18th centuries...

A must place to drop by for at least an overnight stay... definitely worthwhile.

I was there this Chinese New Year - I think Li Jiang is overly commericalised.. but I guess at least it can upkeep the old feel....unlike my trip to India - everything looks such a shame...
