Beautiful Slovenia

The Triglav National Park (in Slovenian: Triglavski Narodni Park) is situated in the most northwestern part of Slovenia. With its 83,807 hectares the triglav national park covers Slovenia's part of the Julian Alps. The The Triglav National Park is named after Slovenia's highest mountain: the Triglav (2864 m), which means the Threehead.

Many people say that a person cannot be considered a real Slovenian until he or she has climbed Triglav. Many trails lead to the top, and they come from various starting points. The easiest is from the southern side, from Pokljuka. The northern face of the mountain offers excellent climbing opportunities with various difficulty levels. But there are also moderate hiking trails coming from the north side. Probably the best way to climb Triglav is to go up from the north and descend down through the majestic Seven Lakes Valley to the southwest.
Make a wish

Short description about it

The Triglav National Park is a true paradise, characterised by beautiful mountain valley's, high mountainpeaks, mountain lakes and rivers, waterfalls and a typical Karst phenomena. There's also a rich and varied plant and animal world. All this beauty is cherished by the local people, who have a rich historical and cultural tradition.

On summer weekends, the place can really get crowded. It is better to go on weekdays and to book the beds in the nearby mountain huts in advance. The ascend and return can be done in a day, but this is true only for the very fit persons. Plus, you don't have a lot of time to enjoy when you rush up and down. So it is best to give it at least two or three days. There are many mountain huts close to the summit and the walking distance between them is about three hours. The highest one is the Kredarica hut, more than 2500 meters high.

Of course, the Triglav National Park can be enjoyed in many other ways, not necessarily climbing high in the Alps. There are many short hiking trails to easily accessible peaks or just scenic points, along streams, into gorges and to the waterfalls. The two most popular lakes are the Bled and Bohinj lake. The highest in Slovenia are Kriska jezera, three tiny lakes at the altitudes from 1800 to over 2200 meters. The picture shows the lowest one of the three, but even this one is covered with ice and snow most of the year.

Will have to return to see those lakes, but I highly doubt that I will take a swim like your friend Tommy. Martin
