    Getting TO/AROUND:

There is an InterCity train once an hour from Mainz to Koblenz. Half of these are direct trains from Frankfurt am Main.

These trains take the scenic route through the Rhine Valley, passing by such places as the Loreley, where the legendary Rhine maidens used their lovely singing to lure love-stricken barge captains to their doom, much as the Sirens did in ancient Greek mythology.

Second photo: Burg Katz (the Cat Castle) from the train.

Third photo: The Rhine River from the train.

Fourth photo: A second class coach in the InterCity train on the way to Koblenz.

Getting TO/AROUND: This ferry boat, run by a man named Hans-Jörg Kräber, goes back and forth across the Rhine River between Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein all day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer months, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in March and April.

Second and third photos: Views of the Rhine River from the ferry.

Fourth photo: The ferry man getting ready to dock as the boat approaches the landing on the Koblenz side.

The ferry leaves from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer, near Rheinstraße.

    Getting TO/AROUND:
From 1819 to 1945 there was a pontoon bridge across the Rhine River, where the ferry boat now runs.

It consisted of 36 floating pontoons, two or three of which had to me moved out of the way every time a ship wanted to pass.
(Click on the photo to see what this looked like.)

I always thought pontoon bridges were temporary things, put up by an advancing army and dismantled soon afterwards, but this one was used for 126 years before it was finally destroyed at the end of the Second World War.
