Site of the former main Synagogue

This monument marks the location of the former main Synagogue of N�rnberg, on the Pegnitz River at Hans-Sachs-Platz.

The Synagogue was built here in 1874 and was destroyed by the Nazis in October 1938, even before their nationwide pogrom and terror night on November 9, 1938.

Jisroel"

This monument on the Essenweinstra�e in N�rnberg, in front of the Hotel Fackelmann, says that across the street (more or less where the gas station is now) was the site of the Synagogue Adas Jisroel, which was built in 1903 and destroyed by the Nazis during their pogrom night of November 9-10, 1938.

Bamberg

Fifty-some kilometers downstream from N�rnberg on the river Regnitz you come to the highly interesting city of Bamberg. My visit there was only for one afternoon to do a presentation, so I didn't really see very much except for the outside of the E.T.A. Hoffmann house and the theater (see next tips).

This photo shows the right arm of the Regnitz River, which at this point is also part of the Main-Danube canal. The yellow and light brown building in the center of the photo is the Bamberg Adult Education Center, which is in an old (remodeled) electricity plant.

A short ways below Bamberg the Regnitz River comes to an end, because it empties into the Main.

E.T.A. Hoffmann house and museum in

Bamberg

Here at Schillerplatz 26 in Bamberg is where the author and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann lived from 1808 until 1813, just across from the theater which now bears his name.

His position as music director of the theater didn't last very long, so he soon had to make his living by giving music lessons to the daughters of well-to-do Bamberg families. One of these girls, Julia Marc, was only thirteen when Hoffmann started giving her voice lessons, and by the time she was fifteen he was hopelessly in love with her. Unfortunately he was twenty years older, and Julia's mother had already arranged for her to marry a rich merchant from Hamburg. Also Hoffmann was a rather small and unattractive man, and in any case he was already married to someone else.

Julia liked him well enough as a teacher and fatherly friend, but that wasn't what he wanted, and the whole thing turned out very badly, as do most of the love affairs in Hoffmann's stories and novellas.

In this house Hoffmann began writing his opera Undine, which was first performed in Berlin in 1816 and can still occasionally be seen in German opera houses. In fact, it was performed several times here in Bamberg last April, in a guest production by the Theatr Wielki in Poznan.

Nonetheless, Hoffmann is best known today as the hero of an opera, not as a composer.

Hoffmann's house is now a museum, which is open Tuesday-Friday from 16.00 to 18.00, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10.00 to 12.00 (from May to October). Admission is EUR 2.00 (EUR 1.00 for students).

E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg

The E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg has its own ensemble for spoken drama, but not for opera, so the only operas you can see here are guest appearances by the opera companies of nearby theaters such as Hof, Coburg, F�rth and Regensburg.

The most recent one was a performance by the Coburg Theater of Tales of Hoffmann, by Jacques Offenbach, which of course is highly appropriate because the protagonist of the opera is the man the theater was named after.

This opera was written long after Hoffmann's death and was based on stories he had told in several of his novellas. In the opera (which I have seen in New York, Frankfurt am Main, Regensburg and Leipzig, but not in Bamberg), the character Hoffmann tells the stories of four women he has loved and lost. At least one of these was perhaps inspired by the real Hoffmann's hopeless Bamberg love affair with Julia Marc (see previous tip).

Off The Beaten Path: Crailsheim

Crailsheim

Crailsheim is a town of about 32,000 people on the railroad line between Stuttgart and N�rnberg. The first mention of Crailsheim in any document was in the year 1136.

In 1945 the center of Crailsheim was almost completely destroyed by air raids and ground battles at the end of the Second World War. From 1952 to 1993 soldiers of the US Army were stationed here, in McKee Barracks.

I only spent one afternoon in Crailsheim, to do a presentation at the Adult Education Center. (It went fine, thanks. Nice group of teachers).
