Markt Taschendorf Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 7 photos

All you loyal readers of my Markt Bibart page (thanks again to both of you) will no doubt recall that there are 386 towns in Bavaria which bear the official (modern) designation of Markt (= market), meaning that they have some slight degree of regional importance.

Because of a quaint Bavarian peculiarity, eighteen of these towns now officially have the word Markt twice in their names. These are towns that were already called Markt in the Middle Ages and have since also acquired the modern designation of Markt as defined in Article 3 of the Municipal Code of the Free State of Bavaria.

That’s why the sign at the entrance to Markt Taschendorf reads “Markt Markt Taschendorf” meaning literally “Market Market Pocket-Village”.

For administrative purposes, ten nearby villages have been incorporated into Markt Taschendorf. One of these is Frankfurt, which is three km to the southwest. So when you enter Frankfurt, the sign says “Frankfurt” in large letters and then “Markt Markt Taschendorf” in smaller letters. (And below that in even smaller letters it says “Kreis Neustadt a.d. Aisch-Bad Windsheim”, for those who want to know which county it is in.)

Together, the eleven villages of the municipality of Markt Taschendorf had 1031 inhabitants at last count.

Don, another fabulous page of yours with very interesting information. I have never heard of this peculiarity of having the word Markt twice in the town names. This seems to be a very German thing.

hi Ive had a lovely friend in Tuttlingen that Ive had numerous visits to over the past 12 years - except the past 2! - and had the privilege of seeing and hearing about a lot of the area from a locals standpoint...very interesting part of the world Bavaria!

Hi Don, this must be your smallest page. Interested to read individuals generate electricity with windmills. Rare for "Wind Farms" over here, or hydro as few mountains and lack of water. Solar panels are everywhere here, winter days here nearly compare with European summers. Today, being Autumn is expected to be a very pleasant 31C.

“Market Market Pocket-Village” - I love that! And that hotel seems excellent value, especially with such good and such a pleasant place in which to eat it :-)
