Leaving here in 1996 was easy. I was on the run from high school, jocks, prom kings and queens, searching in dire need of excitement and cultural influence. Moving to the big city at the head of the Island was my only option. I left without turning my head back over either shoulder. At this time my skateboard wheels were looking for diversity of terrain and my retinas needed stimulation beyond malls and SUV's. As the years in the city put my belongings in 3 different boros for seperate stints of time, the back I fast east towards the Island turned a few degrees forward as time passed.
I started to see the pleasurable aspects of what the coast of Long Island had to offer. As summers and warmth pushed up the eastern seaboard I was finding myself sitting seaside more and more frequently. Eventually these visits shouldered up, shrugged, and here I am today moving back. The oceans centrifugal force has swallowed be up. As city life waned in my eyes, watching the over-commercialization of all that was urban, I ousted Manhatten and would later in my time try to spend more time on he east side of the east river. NYC, I still do love, but living, I want to touch nature alot quicker and easier.
The tri-hamlet of Mastic/Mastic Beach/Shirley has all but ben forgotten. Lining the south shore of Long Island towns have seen an influx of affluent people buying up land to plot the landing of their dream McMansion. The peninsula that forms these three towns have been stricken with the lowest denominator of human existence, lawns are dirt, eviction piles sit curbside, and driveways are decorated with cars floating atop cinder-blocks, tires gone missing years prior. With land on Long Island limited due to water touching all sides, all LI towns are now looked at for possible housing. This influx of buyers have made the property values double, so acting fast was a priorety if owning a home this close to both NYC and the Atlantic Ocean was sought. Another few years of sitting idle would have priced me out of NY and forced my options to that of rent only. |
| | Mastic is made up of three towns, Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley which was formerly known as Mastic Acres. A peninsula is formed by both Carmens River to the west and Forge River to the east gateing off the tri-hamlet from the mainland on three sides. Mastic is a sleepier place than towns just east that start the east end popularized by THE HAMPTONS.
There is an abundance of natural sites and the beaches have escaped unscahthed from the bechfront home builders that destroyed the natural beauty and hampered public access.
Everything on this page is within a 5 minute drive from my new home. A town that doesn't cater to tourism dosen't always warrant a passing. For those off-the-beaten-path type voyagers here may be the answer to your question, "What else is out there besides the Hamptons.
MASTIC, on your to do list. -Smith Point County Beach- Ocean front undisturbed by selfih homebuilders -Fire Island National Seashore- Hike the outback in the Otis Pike Wilderness Area -Wertheim Wildlife Refuge- Hike the White Oak Trail, or canoe down Carmens Riverin to the Great South Bay -William Floyd Estate- Visit the home of a signer of THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. |
