The road abutted the Rhine river as we pushed on north. On hilltop after hilltop ruins of burgs and castles lay dormant, some occupied, some abandoned. Twenty or so later the word Hotel was blaring off the foundation of a mountaintop structure. It resembled the photos previously viewed on the internet a month before. Searching for a road to guide us up we canvassed the perimeter of a hillside winery. Rows of vines forcefully led the eye to the stone crown, but no open path for navigation of the land yacht. We stumbled upon a crickety wood sign adorned with an arrow and Hotel spelled out in English. Blinker ticking right we slid the car up the narrow snaking path, hitchbacks helped the elevation rise. The path opened to a clearing with a large wooden castle door ending the path. With apprehension we pushed the intercom button. A buzz of unlocking rang, the door creaked heavily as it swung open to a arched pathway. Following the only choice of direction we again were interupted by yet another gigantic wooden door, this time sheathed in design pressed metal and OFFICE inscribed. This was it......
Rhineland introduced us to a country we would quickly grow a love for. Till now my only true instances of thought about Germany was a time of terror, WWII, or I knew great beers grew here. I'm glad to whitewash my brain of that facade and replace thoughts that contain such great memories, I didn't rid myself though, of that taste for their sweet steins filled with liquid gold.
Rivers seem to be an essential piece of the German landscape. The river valleys take on a life of their own, it's shores teeming with action.

I stayed at Burg Gutenfels, Sept 19, 2007 while visiting friends, It was an experience I will never forget. Especially since my ancesters were Falkensteins!
you had been lucky to stay there, their internet-page is saying it was sold at end of 2006 and will be no more hotel !

Hey viscous-veined Johnny (good thing your gal saved you btw)! How exactly do you date a doorhandle ;-)
I like the cheese focus this time! "Descent" I think is the word you need. Is that color really called "c0 m10 y100 k0"? My cousin's husband in PA makes gates like that, so the US isn't 100% Walmart-ized yet.
I really want to go to Germany now! That hotel looks fabulous. Great Stories.
