A major absence that I wish wasn't so in Long Island is the livelihood of a downtown district and a center of town. Strip mall monotany runs parrallel to most roadways and needs a new approach. German towns along the Romantische Strasse all have the center as its nucleus of conversing and seems to bring forth more personal interaction and promotes people to get on their feet and walk. America needs this, a land where the biggest Hummer SUV is a form of status in some peoples heads, personal interaction is null and devoid.

Things To Do: The Tauber Valley

Looking out of the hotels window, the eyes drifted to the far off valley that was below the fortifications. Another page from a childrens fable rendered into reality once again accompinied by bird chirps and laden with a hazy patina. The town made a crescent which halfcircled this picturesque valley, so efficiantly named after the river that runs through it. Yuki was mustering up plans of how we can take up residency down there.

There's the silver-lined patina that sfumato's the valley. The washing of colors is the image my memory draws up when reminiscing of what stood before me, looking out into the cozy crease in the earth.

Dark beams of wood slashing up the bleach white facades, this image conjures up thoughts of many back road walks I endured through this medevial cityscape. The woman positioned bottom right was creaky and hunched and never-minded our using of her. She gave interest, and became an essential piece of composition. I don't mean to belittle the woman into mere fodder for my aesthetic pleasure but it just so happens that way. Scurring through the streets, many buildings wear this coat, and help create the stereotypical German village scene.

Things To Do: Herengasse

I want to be able to give you a definite, set in stone, answer that this here building is standing facade to Herengasse but I am a little foggy on what the actual name might be. Lets just assume, I know I should have trepidations about assuming but, the street is Herrengasse. If true, this is a main thoroughfare that leads into the Marktplatz. Along this strip is a year-round Christmas store, some beer gardens, a wein-struben and a few of the Gastofs. Herrengasse seems to be heavily trifficked in high-season due to the fact that I was just before the summer rush and even than, there was many folks doing the touristy slow mope outlining the cobblestone street. I could be lieing about the whole thing too, do you trust me?

Things To Do: Marktplatz

Theres a unexplainable feeling a late day sun inevitably embeds into my aura but I will try to slip it through these fingertips. The elongated shadows stretch farther than high noon and in-doing-so gives a sense a granduer to the objects that cast. The surfaces are hit directly with light blasting dark edged shadows from all potrusions. The Marktplatz in this situation seemed to be weighed down with squinting and heaviness of shadowing slowed the pace a bit. With hands blocking, and heads down the Markt people continued on their motions and the tourist's still sat stagnant mid-plaza in a never-ending wait for something I was not readily aware of. The horse drawn buggy also did as the tourists standing, patiently waiting for one of the many to hop a ride. A trickle interspersed the footsteps that passed by closely as I just stared at a scene to peaceful, and quieting to force my fingers into making.

Things To Do: Alleyways

A distant memory of old NYC has been almost swallowed up by the re-inventing of the city, and how rapidly it occurs. Alleyways in NYC were dark, cavernous spaces that housed vagrants, pushers, and trash receptacles. A perfect backdrop to try something intraveinous or to try carrying out a murder. The onus given was only shed overseas for me. Alleyways such as this (pictured) revived what I saw as a dangerous place and sugar-coated my preconceptions with a daintiness and a feeling of peace. I wouldn't mind my morning route following this path to the local bakery to get a bite of that amazing bread so common in Bavaria.

Things To Do: Gates and fortifications

This medeival town wears fortification walls like a crown. There are many towers throughout that help gain access to this cities chastity belt. The towers acted as a first front and prevented penetration. Much like a father protects their daughters from overanxious pre-pubescent boys, the walls were gaurd stations allowing only those approved.

Breakfast wasn't being served for another two hours and anxiety pryed my eyes open. The early rising put us out exploring as the sun still hasn't mustered enough heat to dissipate the morning dew. Yukijohn readied quickly and headed directly to the opening of the fortification walls. One can walk the walls past rooftops peeking at eye level and falling back down below the walls. A different perspective can be had from up here and should be checked on your must see/must do list. The walk will take you through many of the gates and will give you a comprehensible outlook of how this town is set up.

The town caps off a hill just above the Taber Valley. Driving towards this town down the Romantische Strasse, anticipation was burning. Every other swerve in the road opened up to a silght view through trees. As the town grew larger in sight I quickly figured out that this place was magical and had specific stresses on the guidebook pages for a reason. Rothenburg sums up what I thought this medieveal world was like. All premonitions were exact.
