Beguinage - Bruges
The Beguinage in Brues at its prettiest. In April I was told the daffodils are in full bloom. But even if you happen to miss this period of unique display of colour, the Beguinage is an enchanting place to visit all year round.
The Beguinage can be visited free of charge! A small museum is housed by the entrance, for which admission must be paid.
The Basilica - Bruges
This is the inside view of the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The Gothic architecture, and art work. The place is worth a visit. I couldnt get to march to the alter to touch the relic, as I was afraid to do so!
Basilical of the holy Blood.
Opposite the clusters of trees, in the south west coner of the square, you will see this Basilica. The lower Romanesque section of the church shown in this picture datesfrom the 12th century, and is Brudges' oldest building.
Lake of Love
The Minneswater is a charming and romantic spot. It is widely referred to as the "Lake of Love", "Liebessee", "Lac d'Armour" etc., which is an incorrect, but more interesting translation for the tourists.
Address: Beautiful Lake / Park with White Swans.
Body Shop
The road opposite the fountain leads directly to St Salvator's Cathedral and on to Market Squre. On the way, you will see quite a number of shops. In the pic is a body shop where you can take care of the Royal Bodies.
Directions: In the centre there are also a number of charming shopping galleries, such as Zilverpand,Alberthal,De Gouden Boom and the Theaterboetieks.
't Zand the Fishermen.
The fountain on 't Zand comprises four oxidized steel pillars on which polished bronzed statues have been fixed. The water functions as a universal link for eachgroup of staues.
This particular picture is that of the fishermen on the fountain which, symbolise Bruges link with with the sea.
Freedom Heroes Bruges
Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck were two freedom heroes in the struggle against the French at the beginning of the 14th century.
Belfry
A belfry is a typical feature of Flemish towns that sprang up in the middle ages. It is not a church, nor is it a town hall, but a symbol of reedom and wealth. The Belfry has since become a symbol of the town.
The lower section of the Belfry in this picture, (up to the squre coner towers) dates from 13th century. The section section (up to the poited corner towers) was added in the 14th century.
The octagonal section which accomodates the carillon has crowned the Belfry since the 15th century. The Tower is 83meters high and acessible up to the carillon.
'T Zand Concert Hall
A fouth presence on the skyline that has been dominated for centuries by the Belfry, the Church of our St Saviour's Cathedral, which you cant see in this pics, byt adjacent to it. The design is by the architects Robbrecht and Daem.
The concert Hall was a triump of technical ingeniuty, shaped by a highly personal vision. Its creation was an initiative of the city of Bruges to mark Brugge 2002, European Cultural Capital of Europe.
Art and Culture
As you approach the 't Zand from the central station, you would sight this magnificient Statues. It gives the 't Zands concert hall a Regal look. At the background of the picture is the concert hall.
You will read more about this hall and the European Cultural Capital of Europe in must see tips.
