When I set out on this First trip of 2005 from Paris to Bordeaux, it was with a view to climb the Dune de Pyla. It is instructive to note that Arcachon is about 57 miles from Bordeaux. So it was wise to base in Bordeaux the first night and just did a leisure drive to Arcachon the following day.
As I approached the bend, I saw a spetacle, like the end of the road. Instintively, I packed my car, and took this shot. This was the first impression of the Dune de Pyla:
117 meters high, and 9kilometers in lenght. It lies south of Arcachon.
Immediately at the Car Park, you will see maps showing the entire area, and the direction to follow.
- Pros:Nice beach, beautiful Dunes
- Cons:Could be very tiring to do the whole dunes
- In a nutshell:Its a wonder!

Great sand dunes! "Close to the sun" it is indeed... I like that title :-))
I am hoping to climb Dune 7 in Namibia in April. This one also looks kinda gruelling ;-)
Arcachon is probably my next stop :). Will try to climb the dune aswell!
cool sand dunes!
Fantastic dunes I would love to visit someday. Well, they remind me dunes (the largest in Europe) close to Leba, Poland and in Curonian Split, Lithuania.
What a big old dune you climbed up there! Another nice page!
A great page, Toyin. It looks like fun on the dune. I don't think I would try it though.
I dont think i would be climbing up that dune either:)...all the best...
Well, I can't find the pic of you. But it is a very interesting page. Which one are you?
That certainly is an amazing dune. A big play area. I wasn't even aware of this area... well done on the introduction
