I have been once in Leipzig, and only one day. It was of course not enough to capture the "geist" of the city, although we saw much during that day.
Leipzig offers nice sights and experiences. If only it was flourishing like in the times before communism. After all, it is a very famous culture city, where even Goethe lived and wrote some of his books.
But It was Sunday, and streets half empty all day. In the evening the most central bar street was full of people until 11pm.. After that there was no-one in the center, total 1 "night club" open but no-one there. It was so empty...
Maybe it was because of the week day and the fact that it was summer vacation in the university. But we talked with a taxi driver who said that so many, especially young, people have moved away from Leipzig to west Germany and that is the reason why it is so dead in the city. And he also said that there is basicly no work for people in the city, he himself was highly educated but bound to driving a taxi. Most of the time people looked so sad, with no joy or smile in their face... Maybe we got totally wrong impression about the city, I don't know.
