trip to remember

My friend and had a super trip to Guatemala, we have visited the pre req sites of Tikal and Antiqua and were interested in getting "off the beaten trak". We had heard much about the beach at Monterrico. We booked a shuttle which took us from Antigua to this beach town. What a ride, every thing was either several hours late or much less than we expected, but I guess this really is what we expected, do you get what I mean? We got to Monterrico, walked, I mean Walked a mean strech of beach at about 90 + degrees at mid day to the Kayman Hotel only to find our reservation was not there??? Well best we could do is go next door to the Baule Beach. What a dissapointment. With a little effort what was a dismal, dirty hotel could have been a super place. But we found no protection from bugs ie mosquito nets ( easily available in other establishments ) the pool was dirty looking and the "owner" "Fito" was abusive and tried to put the make on us. Lord only knows if he really was the owner. Probably some part time employee with a ego trip! Made our trip very uncomfortable. We had dinner both nights we were there at the"Pez de Oro" and it was excellent! We did eat once at the Baule but it was slow and real bad, dont eat there even if you can deal with the owner and dirty rooms.! Do visit the turtle project behind the hotel baule it is wonderful all the "animal conservation projects" they have going on. Do enjoy. Monterrico in itself is a fabulous find and a cool getaway, bring off. DJ
