Post Katrina New Orleans

I will not forget what I saw

I headed back to New Orleans for my 5th trip to my favorite U.S. city. This was my first trip post Katrina. I was originally planned to be in New Orleans 9/05, but we know why I didn't get out there in September.

I was one of those people who were shocked over what they saw the days, weeks and months after the hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast. I felt helpless and wished I could just take a couple months off of work and go volunteer. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to do that.

I decided that I would go back to New Orleans. I read from a lot of residents on message boards is what the city needs is the tourist dollars. Well, if I couldn't volunteer, I could go visit and spend some tourist dollars.

People are glad you're there

We went for a long weekend and it turned out to be my most favorite trip out to New Orleans. If you've never been, you might not notice too much damage in the French Quarter or Garden District. There are a lot of restaurants closed (for repairs or for good) or on limited hours. Same goes for the shops.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of tips of what New Orleans is like post Katrina on VT yet (see Alan's page for his post Katrina page). I am limiting my tips to only what I saw on this trip and not from my previous trips.

And now for something completely different ...

Here are a couple sites that I used a lot while researching what New Orleans was like post Katrina:

Quarter Crawl is a great resource to see what is open.

New Orleans Restaurant Guide has an up-to-date listing of what restaurants are open and closed.

Trip Advisor has some good forums that are a little more active as far as questions of what to expect while visiting.

New Orleans Regional Transit Authority
will have bus schedules and all the information you need about getting around town. Just an FYI: the buses are free right now since the St. Charles line of the street car is not running due to hurricane damage.

And lastly, I wrote a really extensive journal entry of each of my days out in New Orleans with pictures and such. I hope it would give anyone that reads it an idea on what to expect.

The entry page to the journal is here.

Pros:"Wonderful food, friendly people who are glad you're there"
Cons:"The city is not 100% open. Lots of restaurants/shops are still closed."
In A Nutshell:"The Big Easy spirit is still alive in this city!"

your trip summarizes what is left of NO for tourists. What we need is housing for construction workers who are natives here.

Nice update Erin. We share a lot in common in urging the Big Easy to revive itself!
