HOLIDAY INN SOLVANG, CALIFORNIA
I find that the Holiday Inn Express Hotels are usually a good place to stay overnight, no matter what town. I was a little disappointed in the Solvang location as they were upgrading the entire wing of the hotel room I was spending the night in. Some of the sounds can be excused if they let you know at the time you make the reservations that the hotel is in renovation and the drill and sledgehammer sounds may disturb you during the day. Hopefully, this is only a short time renovation and this location will be up to par with the other Holiday Inn Express Hotels.
But...the constant humm of a air conditioner/heater the size of a large refrigerator in a closet in the room, which was a suite, was not acceptable. Did not find this out till my wife and I returned from dinner and settled in for the night. The heater was on and when it turned off, the humm was quite noticeable. The front desk could not give me a clue as to what it was, but said they would look into it. When, at midnight! Forget it. Restless night at a chain of hotels that say you will get a restful night. The room was boring and a dresser was placed in front of the sliding glass door in the bedroom that went out to a patio. Great! Smart designer/decorator. Not. I trust they get their act together, because if this were the first time I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, it would have been my last.
Unique Qualities: At the edge of town, walkable to town. The bathroom was clean. A great view from the private patio.

QUAINT OFFICE
First time to Solvang and you most likely are spending only a couple of hours visiting the shops or eating at a restaurant. If you return, you will probably spend the night or even two at one of the quaint hotels/motels in town. The Royal Copenhagen Inn is one of those quaint locations that follows the theme of Solvang. It reminds you of a small village in Denmark.
At first, you believe that this must be homes or apartments in town. In reality, it is the clever design of the hotel to look like many homes. Each room has a different look, so ask what the rooms look like before booking a reservation. Some have a loft look, others high ceilings, one even has an upstairs patio. No on site breakfast but you are given vouchers for a local bakery. Early evening and a voucher for wine tasting at a nearby wine bar is included. Swimming Pool is available for guests and is within sight of most of the rooms. All in all, for the price, a good bargain. Nothing too fancy but a good night's sleep.
Unique Qualities: It may look like a motel, but the feel is as if you were driving up to your own home. Each room has a different exterior that gives it that village look. Each room also has a different look inside. It's a look I like. What else is nice is that the staff is friendly.

YOU HAVE ARRIVED
How do you describe an area of charming cottages, koi ponds, walking bridges, blooming flower beds, and a sophisticated air of refinement? In Solvang, there is only one answer, the Wine Valley Inn & Cottages.
Arriving at the Wine Valley Inn & Cottages, you see before you the charming architecture of Solvang, a Danish community that emulates the look of its roots, Denmark. You begin to get this warm, friendly feel at the front desk as you are welcomed to the hotel. The Wine Valley Inn & Cottages have several lodging options for your stay. There are the Chateau Standard rooms for the budget minded that have clean crisp lines and a wonderful bed. My wife and I stayed in one of these rooms and for the price, the value was there. The Chateau Loft Suites with the unique upstairs bedroom and living room downstairs is a good choice. The Village Clock Tower fireplace deluxe rooms are for the romantically inclined.
Then there is the Cottage Suite, six of them to be exact. When we last stayed at the Wine Valley Inn & Cottages, we wanted to come back and experience the Cottage Suite. We did and must admit that it was a wonderful stay that made you want to remain in the Cottage and not visit the quaint village of Solvang with all its charm. Whichever accommodation you choose, the Wine Valley Inn & Cottage staff, along with the General Manager, Sandra Hallmann, will do everything to make your stay a memorable one.
Unique Qualities: "I would love to return someday", was my wife's remarks when I asked her if she enjoyed the Cottage Suite. This was truly full value for the price. More expensive than the Standard Chateau Room but for that "I want the best room available" desire, it cannot be matched.
Cottage Suite, number 2 of 6, had it's own private patio and spa. Wood burning fireplace in the living room, a dining area and kitchen combination, and a full bath are downstairs. Upstairs, it like walking to heaven. High wood beamed ceilings, large french windows surround the room, a half bath, and an outside patio that looks down on your private garden and spa. What more can I say except to echo my wife's sentiments, "I would love to return someday."

Comparison: more expensive than average
