YOSEMITE CALLS

Oakhurst is one of California's gold towns. It sits at the junction of Hwy 49, the gold country road, and Hwy 41, the southern gateway to Yosemite. There are many hotel/motels and restaurants for the travelling tourists who want to relive those golden late 1800's (49ers) years of gold being discovered and mined all along the California hillsides.

But, the real draw to Oakhurst today is that Yosemite and all it's natural wonders are close at hand. One of the locations in Oakhurst trying to remember the way it was is the Fresno Flats Historical Park near downtown Oakhurst. Many displays of buildings and vehicles of the old pioneer days and wild west are here, as well as a fine museum of times past.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Good home base for Hwy 49 and Hwy 41, Yosemite
  • Cons:Southern end of Hwy 49, the California gold towns road
  • In a nutshell:Perfect overnight stop for Yosemite and Bass Lake

The Laramore-Lyman House, era 1870's looks so charming and Erna's Elderberry House restaurant sounds yummy! I remember the train many moons ago. It was fun!

Not only interesting but a very useful page too! We'll be passing through here late March - do hope in time for a meal at Erna's!

We have an Oakhurst here in Jersey...it doesn't seem as interesting or beautiful as this Oakhurst. Thank you for the wonderful birthday wishes. Dreaming of our next adventure...

Hi Larry, Wunderbar!!! coverage of Oakhurst's environs-gr8t tips & pics. Have spent some time at nearby Mariposa, another charming Yosemite portal. There's a similar gourmet restaurant in a house in Richland, WA but forget the name. Doug
