Sitting on top of a hill, a few blocks from main street Julian, California, is one of America's 10 most romantic inns, ORCHARD HILL COUNTRY INN. The private drive up to the Lodge portion of Orchard Hill makes the anticipation of something wonderful is about to happen. It does when you see the magnificent Lodge of Orchard Hill.
Registration takes place as you enter the Lodge and while signing in, you are offered Julian's famous apple cider to enjoy. The Lodge has 10 rooms located on two floors with a great room for lounging by the fireplace and enjoying afternoon wine and hor d'oeuvres on plump sofas and chairs. Best of all are 12 cottages located on the property for added quiet and romantic nights. Fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, balconies, and lots of space to enjoy the mountain air. My wife, Sue, and I spent time in the Gladstone Cottage and didn't want to leave. It was that romantic.
Unique Qualities: Two dining rooms are inside the Lodge at Orchard Hill Country Inn. Breakfast is served in one of two dining areas; a wonderful Julian vista room and a wall mural of the Orchard Hill property room. Dinner is available four nights a week. Videos of hundreds of movies are available to take to your Lodge room or Cottage to enjoy a classic or modern movie. Hiking around the hills of the property and you see relics of the past in machinery of old as well as a pond, many trees and the sound of singing by wilderness birds.

A B & B hotel in the middle of Julian, a mountain town in Southern California. In fact the Julian Hotel was called "Hotel Robinson" after the free slave Albert Robinson who with his wife, Margaret, owned the hotel until 1921 when it was purchased by the Jacobs family and during the 47 years they owned it the name was changed to the "Julian Hotel". The present owners, Steve and Gig Ballinger, have had the Julian Hotel listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Washington D.C, the only one with this listing out of the many buildings built in Julian from the late 1890's to 1920's. In front of the Julian City Hall is the plaque for the State of California Point of Historical Interest for the town of Julian.
The Hotel has the charm of the 1900's and the feel of the old gold rush days as well. An old free standing fire stove is in the lobby as well as a display case of the old days. Make sure you have the breakfast. There are rooms and the second floor is more quiet. Being right in town is a plus, so once you park, you are then free to walk the shops right across the street, the entire town area, or hike up in the hills.
Unique Qualities: Go back in time from the minute you step on the porch. Get the feel of a turn of the century hotel in this Julian treasure.
