Carmel Beach: STROLL THE CLIFFS PATHWAY BY THE SEA

  • Going to visit Carmel-by-the-Sea, one thinks of the quaint town architecture with it's many Victorian style boutique shops, restaurants, and homes. What ever you do, do not forget the "Sea" part of Carmel-by-the- Sea. Walk or drive down to the seashore and walk the path that allows you to not only enjoy the view of the wide expanse of beach and the waves crashing on rocks but a chance to sink your toes into the sand and dip them into the Pacific Ocean and feel like a 4 year old, all over again. Quite exhilarating.

Oh, you will also view some wonderful plants, flowers, and trees while on your walk. Benches are also along the path to rest and take it all in. If not mesmerized by the ocean, look to the other side of the street and see some of the most magnificent homes that most only dream about. One more thing, the cars may be a little exotic as well.

Basilica Mission: MISSION IS A MUST
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, 1771, is the site of The Carmel Mission Basilica and National Shrine of Blessed Junipero Serra, who founded the California Missions and is buried in the Church. Peaceful is the word of the entire grounds that overlook the sea with the hill top view of mountains to the inland side, making a visit to these grounds a must when in the Carmel area.

Tours are given as well as self-guided tours of the entire grounds. I found the museum and buildings to be well worth a stop alone, but combined with the historic background and the burial site of the founder, I believe it to be very educational and emotional as well, no matter what faith or belief you may have. Check out their website for all the facts and figures regarding this Mission.

17 Mile Drive: WORLD FAMOUS 17 MILE DRIVE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea 17 Mile Drive
  • Near Spyglass Hill Golf Course
  • by travelgourmet

  • The world famous 17 mile drive is a private toll road and is located throughout the Pebble Beach and Del Monte Forest area of Carmel. It is one of the most beautiful sights to visit, with the landscapes of land and sea meeting each other in rocky magnificence.

Within this area are world class golf courses, such as the Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay,and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Also to be seen is one of California's most photographed trees, the Lone Cypress. Many vantage stops are on the 17 mile drive with vistas that make you just gasp in awe.

More pictures of this magnificent drive is in my Carmel-by-the-Sea travelogue.

It's good, it's real good. But be prepared to buy a small car for the same price. Save it for a special occasion.

It was a horrid experience. I'd never go back though. VA beach really isn't my fav. Nice waves, but I call it "Ghetto Beach" Prefer the Eastern Shore-Rehoboth, Dewey, etc. ~
