You know about seaweed and how you can get tangled in it, well elephant kelp is even easier to become tangled in. So, keep your eyes below water as well as above for the kelp and keep your distance. When snorkeling, you like to follow a fish or swim underwater close to the sandy bottom. Well, in Santa Catalina waters, the currents run fast and you can be 10-15 feet away from the elephant kelp and a current headed in your direction can have the kelp reach you. If you do get into the kelp beds, work your way up slowly and don't kick hard, nice and easy does it and you will be fine.
