Lucca is one of Tuscany's hidden treasures. Hidden, because it is behind stone walls and has been since the Etruscans and then the Romans started to build a wall.
The actual walled city was walled, as seen today, in the 16th century. Never used as a defense in war but as a dike to hold back flood waters in the 18th century. The town is built within the walls and the little cobblestone streets weave their magic to all that walk the walk. The wall itself is walkable or do as many do, bicycle. |

mvtouring Mon Oct 26, 2009 21:10 UTC It is still a dream of mine to go back to Tuscany and do a cooking/travel stint there. ;-) | icunme Tue Sep 15, 2009 11:09 UTC No golf carts? OK, I'll walk the wall - reward myself w/zucchini flowers! <(•¿•)> | Callavetta Wed Mar 4, 2009 03:59 UTC I hadn't imagined it to be such a wide wall! I thought it would be more like Dubrovnik. I will have to be sure to do this. Grazie! | JLBG Sun Mar 1, 2009 21:09 UTC Lucca is a city I always wanted to visit but until now failed to do it. I have to visit its great wall, for sure! I have never tasted Zucchini flowers and should come for that! |
