TORRE PENDENTE DI PISA | The straight story on the Leaning Tower of Pisa |
The main attraction of the town of Pisa is the Campanile (bell tower) in the Campo dei Miracoli. Most likely one of the most photographed buildings in the world as well as most talked about, it should be named the Most Leaning Tower of Pisa. Building began in 1173 by the original architect, Bonanno Pisano, who had the appropriate name. Standing eight stories high, made of white marble, with 294 steps to the top. When finished in 1350, the bell tower which began it's noticeable leaning in 1178, actually had only one bell. It wasn't until 1719, that the last bell was cast.
All seven bells, each with their own name, when rung, were to represent one of the seven musical scales. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. The order in which the bells were originally cast and their names: Pasquereccia-1262, Terza-1473, Vespruccio-1501, Crocifisso-1572, Del Pozzo-1606, L'Assunta-1654, and San Ranieri-1719. So, when asked for whom the bells toll, the answer could be for the ages. |
