Land Rheinland-Pfalz Travel Guide: 4,303 reviews and 12,747 photos
.....mostly by car.
With much to ponder as I travelled around the edge of the Rhein, from Worms to the car ferry over the river near oppenheim.
Flatness, of course, for the Rhein is a mighty river and was even more so in prehistoric times. Its flood plain stretches for miles.
The straightening of the river in the 19th century removed some of its meanders. Many of the areas once enclosed by a past meander have reverted to their natural state (some are protected). But others have flat, fertile fields of crops, and small villages, and long views into the distance......
Not all is flat everywhere, of course. Hills rise on either side, at the edges of the flood plain or forming the river bank itself.
I need to explore more ......but so far I've visited (albeit briefly in many cases):
- Pros:History, river, landscape, little villages, wine...
- In a nutshell:Much more to explore than one might expect.
