Much-needed weissbier!
I put these two reviews together because, quite frankly, you could sit at an outside table in either Browns or the Black Bean...they are directly opposite each other on Ludwigsplatz and their outside tables are intermingled.
But I had my first Nurnburg drink (a looong Weissbier and very, very welcome!) at Browns. And also had several coffees and apfelschorlen there on a very hot evening, just to rehydrate myself after a long day's wandering.
They serve all types of drinks, of course, and cakes and snacks and ice-creams.
Both cafes were always crowded, so I assume that local people (there were plenty using them) consider them to be of a good standard and reasonable price.
I certainly did.
And having a fountain nearby was nice too! :-)

Kafe und kuchen :-)
Good coffee, a most pleasant place to sit under a parasol and watch the world go by, serves drinks and cakes and snacks.
Pleasant and friendly service (good English) , no hassle to drink up and move on, comfortable cushioned spot right outside the entrance to sit and put your feet up if you choose.
Nice place. Enjoyed it.

Exterior
The building has probably been here since 1380....and the Hausbrauerei for quite a substantial length of time too.
The cellars under the buildings go back at least 600 years......you can take a tour round them (see other tip), and they are still in use for storing and maturing both beer and schnapps.
There'sa courtyard, and pleasant 'bierstube' (beer rooms) for a drink, a snack or a meal. Prices are reasonable, the menu full of local dishes.
I didn't eat here...I had no time...but I had a small Schwarzbier 'vom Fass' (draught, not bottled). It was one of the nicest beers I have ever drunk.
Definitely a place worth visiting if you are on a beer-tasting wander!

Australian
Well.
Not really what I expected to find in Germany!
The Australian is on the southern end of the Fleischbrucke, a prime position. It serves ice-cream (obviously), coffee etc, with tables outside.
I tried some of their ice-cream, because the novelty of home-made Australian ice-cream could not be missed. It was very pleasant.
Not a patch on Italian ice-cream, I'm afraid, but perfectly acceptable.
You may wish to try it out of sheer curiosity, like me. :-)

The exterior
Yes, it's just off the Hauptmarkt in the most historic area of Nurnburg, on the way up to the Kaiserberg.
Yes, it's big and obviously aimed at tourists...menus are in French and English as well as German.
But it's also popular with locals as a reasonably-priced place to eat good, basic regional food with good beer.
So I ate there as well. I had rather lovely slcies of roast pork in an onion gravy, with a dumpling. I don't know exactly what I had.....I forgot to take a photo of the menu!
The pork was scrummy and so was the gravy, but the dumpling just did not appeal. There was some ingredient/taste which did not appeal to me, as simple as that: the dumpling itself was perfectly ok.
If you want somewhere to eat Bavarian food (they do chips and things as well), right in the centre of the city (in front of the Rathaus), at reasonable prices, then you could do worse than try Bratwurst Roslein. Menus are on their website.

Zum Gulden Stern
A very old building this......seemingly undamaged in the air-raids of the war (or not much damaged anyway).
Lovely and wooden and gloomy (in the right way) inside, with just the right atmosphere for warming-up on a cold day .....but it was warm when I visited, so I sat outside.
The beer (I drink dark beer, of course....Schoppen Altfranken Dunkel) was very tasty and very welcome, my 'Stadtwurst' and kartoffelnsalat very enjoyable.
The building dates from 1419. Yes, the menu is rather limited (and why not..it's a bratwurstkuche!) but it's tasty and very reasonably-priced.
I'd recommend you have at least one meal here, if only for the history!
Address: Zirkelschmiedsgasse 26
