"Just a quick whizz round............" Kalwaria Zebrzydowska by leics

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Travel Guide: 71 reviews and 180 photos

You'd need a whole day at least to explore this place.

It's now a World Heritage site but dates back to 1602, when the then Governor of Krakow set up a religious complex there (and the nearby town grew up around it to service its many visitors and pilgrims).

There are 42 chapels and churches dotted about the wooded slopes of the Zar mountain......and I had no chance to see more than a couple. As I said, you'd need all day (possibly more than one day).

There are several different routes around the chapels, taking 2-3 hours each.

The Baroque church of the Angelic Mother of God, built in the 1700s, adjoins the monastery.

Somewhere to plan an overnight stay if you really want to explore, and a fascinating insight into the importance of religion for Poland past and present.

And with lovely views over the surrounding countryside.
