"Kantara Castle" Dhavlos by leics

Dhavlos Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 16 photos

Kantara village is tiny, so I'm not surprised it isn't listed on VT. Kaplica (Dhavlos) is the nearest place I could find to write about this Crusader castle with its truly superb views.

It's reached by somewhat vertiginous and winding roads from north or south....the northern road has recently be re-surfaced and improved, but is still steep and twisty in parts, with sheer drops. The southern route is narrower, even steeper-sided and really rather scary (in a coach, at least). If I was driving I'd far prefer the route from the northern side of the range!

One of the three castles in the mountain range which orginally date from Byzantine times (the others are St Hilarion and Buffavento), Kantara stands at the eastern end, at a height of 630m. Like the other castles, it was extended and improved by the various rulers of Cyprus (Crusaders, Lusignans) and partially destroyed by the Venetians. It was in ruins by 1562.

It is said that Isaac Komnenos, the ruler of Cyprus, surrendered to Richard l (Rchard the Lionheart) at Kantara in 1191.

Only a little of the castle remains undamaged although some parts have been fully restored for use, I believe, during the difficulties leading up to the partition of the island.

You can walk around the edge of the castle for truly stunning views in all directions (although sensible footwear is required....the ground is rough).

And the castle is worth a visit for those views alone (more photos in the travelogue)......
