Teeny tiny harbour.....

by leics - last update: Nov 1, 2008

Right at the sea's edge
............and, in truth, I did little to explore Riomaggiore.

Too tired by then (it was a lovely, sunny, warm October day) and I needed to get back to La Spezia to visit a museum.

But I did like Riomaggiore's tiny, tiny harbour. A good place to sit and have a restorative coffee and beer (don't drink wine much, sorry).

Tall, pastel-coloured crowded houses climbing the steep hillsides, of course.........narrow winding stepped alleyways.......a definite sense of the Medieval: this is the way it was hundreds of years ago, underneath the 21st century layers and the tourist provision.

The mosaic in the pedestrian tunnel from the station is worth investigating. It's modern, of course, but rather spectacular (and very long). Too easy to whizz past and not pay attention, so I'll make a tip about it.

I'll go back, I think. Having done my day of 'scouting', I now think the Cinque Terre villages will repay proper exploration. But not, most definitely not, in the season: even at the end of October there were many, many day visitors and walkers. In summer it must be extremely crowded, not my sort of place at all.
