Kaffeehaus: Sacher Torte at Sacher Hotel

  • Sacher Hotel is one of the most famous place in Vienna.
In Sacher Café the famous Sacher Torte is served, but you can find it also in other Konditorei (Bakeries) around the city.

This famous cake was at the heart of a controversy in Austria for six years. It seems some Austrians took their baking so seriously that an argument over what constituted a true Sacher Torte erupted and had to be decided in court. In the early 1800's, the Congress of Vienna ruled on the matter. It decided that the true Sacher Torte was made of two chocolate cake layers separated by apricot jam with a chocolate glaze over the top and sides of the cake. Justice was served!!

My suggestion is to try Konditorei Alida, next to St Stephens Dom, wher you can choose among a lot of marvellous cakes.
It was our daily meeting point, just to taste new cakes, dinking a coffee and be ready again to walk around!

  • You can see here Wolfang Amadeus Mozart’s Denkmal.
The famous composer was born in Salzburg in 1756, and died in Vienna in 1791.
In Vienna you can also visit the Mozart Memorial, a house where he lived from 1784 to 1787 and where he composed his opera "The Marriage of Figaro".
If you’ve seen the movie "Mozart", I am sure you’ll remember how he died: composing the "Requiem". Although he died young, he’s still considered one of the best composers of all times.

  • This market is on a central sidewalk between two streets called Linke (left) and Rechte (right) Wienzeile. This is a fruits and vegetables market. You’ll find here some traditional Viennese products too.

  • In this public park you can find the monument of Franz Grillparzer (a poet), the sculpture was done by Rudolph Weyr, Karl Kundmann and Karl Hasenauer in 1889.
In this park there’s also The Temple of Theseus an imitation of the Theseion temple in Athens, built between 1820 and 1823 by Peter Nobile. Inside the temple there used to be the "Group of Theseus" by Antonio Canova (now in the Museum of Fine Arts).

  • Here the Plague Column. Many other columns like this where erected all over Austria after this one.
The purpose of these columns was to celebrate the end of an epidemic plague (yes, that is where the name of the column comes from).
In 1679 a wooden column was erected right here, it was replaced some years after (1693) by the current one.
Many local artists took part in the erection of this column, like P. Strudel, L.O. Burnacini and F von Erlach.

  • These buildings are part of the UNO city. They were constructed from 1973 to 1979 to host some international organizations that had their offices in other parts of Vienna. Some of the most important organizations are: the International Atomic Energy Agency and The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, among other agencies of the UN.

Next to the UNO city, there’s the Austria Convention Center Vienna built from 1982 to 1987, with several conference halls, designed by the Viennese architect J. Staber.
