  • Verona - you know, Romeo and Juliet . . . Also the place where they film all those Italian operas and show them later on TV (Arena di Verona, remember?) It was built about 2000 years ago.

It is a Roman Amphitheater that can seat 25,000 people. Concerts at the Arena are usually sold-out, so buy your tickets early. And don't count on using the Roman bathrooms facilities, as the Romans were pretty much outdoors type of people . . .

  • Although the building is now used for operas and other cultural shows, its original use was (as you can imagine) crueler: the famous Gladiators fights.

This arena is specially well preserved because the people of Verona have always taken good care of it. Already in the 16th century a special commission was designated to restore and preserve it. The Arena is 138x109 meters big.

  • In front of the Arena sits the 'Piazza Bra'.
On this huge square there are many bars, restaurants and souvenir shops and some interesting buildings.
In front of it there is 'Palazzo Barbieri', the Town Hall finished in 1883. Other interesting buildings are the 'Gran Guardia' Palace, a 1610 Sanmicheli inspired building, and the 'Palazzo Guastaverza', a Sanmicheli work.

  • 'Piazza delle Erbe' is one of the most picturesque squares in Italy.
In this square there's a popular and colourful market. This market has a long history, because already during the Roman Empire this was the place where the Roman Forum stood.
In the market youýll find fresh fruit and vegetables.
In this square there are many interesting buildings and sculptures.

  • Tower Lamberti is the highest tower in Verona, it?s 83 meters high. Its construction began in 1172 and it took several centuries to finish. The octagonal end of the tower still holds the old ?Rengo? and ?Marangona? bells (1464).

Next to the Lamberti Tower sits the 'Palazzo Comune' (municipal) with its neoclassical facade. The building dates form the middle age, but in the 19th century a new facade was added.

  • As you?ll probably know Shakespeare?s Romeo and Juliet?s love story takes place in Verona. This city is not only the perfect place for this story to take place for its middle age ambient, there are also some real references here. The house you?re seeing is the "real" home of Juliet?s family (the Capuleti). The building dates from the 13th century and during Christmas period there is a Xmas tree in the court where everybody put over it love messages written on pieces of paper

  • This house is called 'Casa Montecchi' and the popular tradition says it?s the house of Juliet?s lover: Romeo.
This house is not far from Juliet?s one (just a couple of minutes walk).
Unfortunately Romeo?s house has not been restored and the building is not very well preserved (it can?t be visited).

  • The Roman Theater was build in the first century. In this semicircular Theater nowadays take place the Shakespeare Festivals. The Archeologist Andrea Monga began its restoration in the 19th century. The restoration took some time, because it wasn?t finished till recently.

Not far from here there?s the Archeological Museum, where you?ll find some interesting Roman mosaics and sculptures.

The churches of Verona: Santo Stefano Church

  • A legend says that this Romanesque Style Church was the first church in Verona.
The real story is that in the 6th century an oratory was built here (which was destroyed and reconstructed in the 8th century). But the current San Stefano Church is a 12th century work.
Inside you?ll find an interesting Baroque decoration.
