  • One of the first differences in customs was in eating out. Here eating is treated as an experience not as an another item on the 'to do list'.

It makes no difference if it's a little coffee shop (the kind that serves coffee) or a 4 star restaurant, you will most likely have to ask for the bill. Unlike our servers, who stop by to see if you want anything else, then lay the check on the table. Here, you are left alone to enjoy the experience, and it would appear that leaving the check on the table would be considered as rude.

Also the tipping rate is different, as a rule 10% appears to be the normal, however I haven't received any complaints at tipping American standard for good service (15-20%)

Local Customs: Shopping? BYB - Bring your own bag

  • The rule of thumb for shopping is 'self serve' & bring your own bag!

Shops & markets that cater to tourists will wrap and bag items. If you go to a regular grocery store, it's do it yourself. No carry out, no baggers, and they are more than happy to sell you a bag if you didn't bring one.

While this usually isn't a major problem, it can be an inconvenience. Like the day I went to the open market in Amsterdam and bought several cheeses. After I paid him, he handed me several chunks of loose cheese. Of course it wasn't going to fit in my purse, and I didn't wish to walk around town carrying a half dozen pieces of cheese... Several minutes later he was able to find someone who had a plastic bag.

Buy bulbs in season only. So this is Autumn for Tulips and all spring flowering bulbs. From August till Christmas. The flowermarket is a very good place to buy, you will find a bigger selection and better prices but avoid the souvenirplaces.

Great comment about Dutch police. I have found the very same thing. One can also add that they tolerate no bull----! Even though pot smoking is tolerated, it is not legal. Don't light up in front of a copper.

I have been doing some research to see where to spend some of my vacation time and your information is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to write what you did in order to help out fellow travellers.

Great tip on the free ferries, and I wish I'd known about the tulip museum before my trip! Also, excellent point about how the red light district & the coffeeshops are only one aspect of Amsterdam.
