The oldest city in Poland Let me give you a really short overview of my city's history - in my opinion, to know what it is, you need to learn what it was. Tips and photos will follow soon... Kalisz is the second biggest city of Wielkopolska region - Poznan is the first one. With population of over 100,000 inhabitants it holds the privilige of being the oldest city in Poland! The Medieval borough which was governed by the Piast dynasty is now situated in the South part of the city. It's called Zawodzie and it has been turned into an archeological park.
In the old ages Kalisz (known as Calisia which means "mud" or something equally nasty in Latin) was also a part of the Amber Road - called Szlak Bursztynowy or Jantarowy Szlak in Polish.
About 900 years ago first Jewish settlers came to Kalisz and from that moment on the community became an integral part of the city! The community lived in the west part of the city with it's main street - Zlota (Golden Street).
In the XVI century a Roman Catholic religious order of Jesuits was brought to Kalisz - we owe the beautiful architecture to the Order.
As usual, war ruined all the integrity and peace! (that's the II World War).
It's the XXI century now though! Big houses, fast cars, and fast life! Thank God for places like this, where you can relax in the beautiful City Park with it's Chinese House (does it even look Chinese??) and the theatre & where you can just simply STOP! and think... After all, the pubs, cafes and shops won't go anywhere... |
