Temples Everywhere

Bagan is a realization of a dream. I love Angkor Wat, its amazing, but Bagan far exceed it (in my humble opinion :-) ).

A place that you really need to do a lot of effort to go too. For one, even if its in Asia, I need to secure a visa to go, no international roaming and its in the middle of Myanmar, domestic flight is a must. The hassle, it was all worth it.

From the window of the plane, via Air Bagan, I can already see the tiny brown stupa, across a vast track of arid land. Thousands of stupa. An spiritual place for the people of Myanmar.

Nothing beats Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sakura Hotel

Bagan is best completed with stay at Thiripyitsaya Sakura Hotel. The name is hard to master, I prefer to call it Sakura. :-) Thiripyitsaya by the way is a name of one of the Bagan village.

It is most sought after and since we travel in June, off season, it was on a steep discount, and all worth it.

Defining moment, every time you arrive, from trip outside the hotel or start a meal in the restaurant, a hotel staff will offer you cold face towel infused with jasmine scent. Oh my, its really refreshing.

Beautiful People

The local people are very friendly, and beautiful. And very religious, our taxi driver become a monk 3 times in his life, and he is only 35 years old.

We have meet this nice girl, in Dhammayangyi, temple best known for its massiveness. She accompany us and tour the whole temple, can speak good English, i learn she is still studying, she never impose for us to buy, but as she is very nice. We buy her set of 12 postcards. The make up on her face is tanaka, a powder from tree bark to serve as sunscreen.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:thousand stupas, friendly locals
  • Cons:off the beaten path, no direct flight from Sg.
  • In a nutshell:Beats Angkor :-) for me
