  • Originally built by Napoleon to celebrate his conquests and military might, it stands today as a symbol of French national pride. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Memorial Flame are located under the Arc. Admission is free, but there is a fee to visit the roof top observation deck where you can view the streets and area around the Champs-Elysees.

  • No street in Paris is more well known than the Champs-Elysees. This famed thoroughfare is bustling with shops, restaurants, cafes, cinemas and car showrooms. The tree lined avenue is 1.2 miles long and runs from the Arc de Trimophe to the Egyptian obelisk at the place de la Concorde.

  • Outlandish descibes the design of the Pompidou Center. The exterior of the building houses the "guts" of the building. Color coded air ducts, conduit and pipes grace the exterior. The 6 level interior houses one of the world's largest collections of modern art.

  • To commemorate his military victories, Napoleon built this arc between 1806 and 1808. Modeled after the Arch of Constantine in Rome, it is decorated with rose marble. The names of Napoleon's battles and treaties are inscribed under the arc. The original bronze statue of horses and horsemen that adorned the top was taken as plunder from Saint-Marc of Venice. It was returned to Italy after World War II and replaced with a copy.

  • One of the most famous cathedrals in the world and France's most visited religious site. Construction on this gothic church began in 1163 and completed about 1345. You can follow in the footsteps of Victor Hugo's hunchback Quasimodo by climbing the 226 ft high towers and get a closer view of the famed gargoyles.

  • This glistening white neo-Byzantine basilica is perched atop Montmartre's hill. The second highest point in Paris, it offers sweeping views of Paris. Sacre-Coeur was commissioned as atonement for the deaths of 58,000 people killed during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Construction began in 1875 and funded by donations from all across France.

  • Located at the Place Igor Stravinsky next to the Pompidou Center is the first modern fountain in Paris. Several modern kinetic sculptures can be found here. This a a great place to take pictures, relax, hang out and view modern art if you don't want to pay admission to the Pompidou Center.

  • In front of the Pompidou Center is the "Place Georges Pompidou" or "Place Beaubourg". The square is a lively area full of activity and people hanging out. It is a favorite place to watch street entertainers, street performers, mimes, and sidewalk portrait artists.

  • The Flame of Liberty is a replica of New York's Statue of Liberty Flame. Presented to Paris by Americans in 1987 to commemorate French American friendship and the 1987 Statue of Liberty restoration. The flame became an impromptu shrine to Princess Diana, when she died in a car accident in the tunnel located below the flame. For many years it was defaced by mourners and admirers. There are fewer and fewer admirers coming to the flame nowadays and the city has since cleaned up the flame. It is reverting to its intended symbolism.

Yes, indeed, a city to be experienced, not just visited.

Please do not confuse Porte Dauphine with Place Dauphine.
