Porto is a foggy dream of a city with so much to offer. It is situated on the banks of the Douro River only 6 km before it empties into the Atlantic ocean, so it has that seaside fishing village feel. It is somewhat of a nostalgic glance into the past with old trams clattering alongside cars and old boats cruising alongside sleek speedboats. It is the perfect blend of old and new. Portugal's second largest city is characterized by an elegance reminiscent of Paris or Prague that can be witnessed in its lovely Placa de Liberdade and amazing Stock Exchange. Porto is most famous however for its port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, which attract wine aficionados in droves. The great thing about Porto is that it is unapologetically unreconstructed and lacks the extreme commercialization that normally comes along with loads of tourists. |
| | General Information Porto is located in northwestern Portugal and is situated on the banks of the Douro River only 6 km before it dumps into the Atlantic Ocean. Portuguese is the official language, the Euro the official currency, and Lisbon is the capital city. |
