I went to Glenorchy on my way to the start of the Routeburn track. This is also a common stop for people heading also to Greenstone, Caples, Rees and Dart Valley tracks.
Others, come for jet-boat trips on the Dart River. For more general information on the town visit this excellent website. If you just happen to be in Queenstown and rank Glenorchy low in your priority list, come anyway and think about it later - trust me, the drive from Queenstown during early morning is absolutely amazing!!!
The Routeburn Track is mistakenly seen as a "plan B" to the Milford Track. Because the former is less popular, it is easier to get a trekking permit for it from the Department of Conservation (DOC). This is a three-day hike that takes you through unforgettable scenery.
Before you start, make sure you are in reasonable shape and that you have appropriate gear for bad weather, as it can change very rapidly.
In order to do this hike, you must register with DOC. Consider making reservations ahead of time, as this track is unsurprisingly becoming more and more popular. You can either stay at their superb huts (itinerary described below) or camp in designated areas.
You can find plenty of great information on this track at the DOC's website.
- In a nutshell:Just do it!
