Queenstown is rightly regarded as one of the most scenic locations in the world. Yes, this may well be the case; no, this is not an overstatement. The glorious Lake Wakatipu reflects the imposing Remarkables mountain range in a simply too-good-to-be-true combination. There are no good pictures of it - you have to experience it in loco. Settled in the mid 1850s, according to the newcomers, this splendid location was worth a queen's stay -hence the name. The landscape is by no means all you will find, however. Whether you are looking for a fine, peaceful break or an overwhelming adrenaline rush, it would be a crime not to spend at least two days here. Fortunately, it is hard to avoid Queenstown as it is on the way to ultra-popular Milford Sound. Also, if you are considering some hikes along the Milford, Routeburn, Rees-Dart, Greenstone-Caples or Kepler tracks this is the place to find transportation to trail heads. Queenstown is notorious for its rather rambunctious - and in some cases enigmatic - sporting activities, which include paragliding, parachuting, motorcycling, mountain biking, skiing, white-river rafting, canyoning (?), river surfing (!), white-water sledging (?) and jetboating. Indeed, bungy-jumping is just the tip of the iceberg!... |
During late spring, one can still see plenty of snow on top of mountains around Wakatipu lake, which makes this setting even more striking. |
