Discovering Lisbon

by AlPhilip - last update: Feb 20, 2005

If you come to Portugal you need to go to Lisbon. It's the Portuguese major town and it is an amazing city.
If you come here there are some places you must visit like Expo's 98 sight, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Belem and experience Lisbon's nightlife.
On this picture you can see Ponte 25 de Abril, one of the 2 bridges that cross the Tagus river to the south shore.

Parque das Nações

This place is the Expo's 98 site. It's a really beautiful place for admiring modern architecture. You'll also find it a great place to walk around, for shopping and even for going out at night.
It also has some really nice hotels and residential areas built after World's exposition in 98.
In Parque das Nações you can also find a huge concert hall, Pavilhão Atlântico, FIL (international fair of Lisbon) and a very nice comercial center where you can enjoy a nice meal on the terrace.

Sintra

If you ever come to Lisbon you must go to Sintra. It's an amazing place, far from all the city problems, where you can relax in its marvelous nature, stroll around the beautiful and historic city center, or visit Palacio da Pena.

Palacio da Pena is the most complete and notable example of Portuguese architecture in the Romantic period. It stands on one of the rocky peaks of the Serra de Sintra, and blends in a surprisingly fortunate manner with its natural background of greenery and crags, testifying to the aesthetic potentialities of the project.

The Palace dates back to 1839, when the King Consort Dom Fernando II bought the ruins of the Hieronymite Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena and started to adapt it for use as a residence, according to his Romantic taste. It has astonishing views of the nearby city of Cascais.
